Gordon Strachan believes Chelsea have virtually no hope of securing Champions League qualification this campaign. The Blues endured a miserable season, ending 10th in the Premier League and missing out on all three UEFA club competitions.
Arsenal clinched the title, with Manchester City, Manchester United, and Aston Villa filling the subsequent spots and securing their place in Europe’s elite competition. Due to England’s strong performance in the UEFA coefficient rankings, which track how clubs from each country fare on the continental stage, the Premier League received an additional Champions League berth.
This extra berth goes to the highest-placed club not already qualified, meaning fifth-placed Liverpool claimed it. Bournemouth and Sunderland earned Europa League qualification from sixth and seventh positions respectively, while Crystal Palace secured entry by triumphing in the Conference League.
Brighton finished eighth, securing a spot in UEFA’s third-tier competition. Strachan believes the Seagulls could challenge Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur for Champions League qualification this season, warning that Chelsea might fail to secure any European involvement whatsoever.
Speaking to Betway about his Premier League predictions, the former Manchester United player named Arsenal as the frontrunners while questioning whether Manchester City can maintain their standards under Pep Guardiola. He drew comparisons to the period following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from United, suggesting such transitions create significant uncertainty. Strachan also lauded Arsenal’s transfer strategy.
Regarding United’s prospects, Strachan indicated they could finish in the top three provided they strengthen their midfield with two additional signings.
When discussing the race for fifth place, Strachan excluded Chelsea from contention. The 69-year-old listed Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal as his four likely candidates. He suggested Brighton could potentially break into the top five as a surprise contender, noting their stability under a capable manager. Aston Villa could also pose a threat to the top three positions.
Below that group, with Brighton as his outside bet for the top five, Tottenham would also be in contention given their substantial spending and need to compete at a higher level. Strachan noted Tottenham took a risk by completing transfers early, which meant paying premium fees for players.
Regarding whether Tottenham might face a third consecutive season battling against relegation, Strachan invoked comparisons between Roberto De Zerbi and Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scottish former international cannot envision Tottenham suffering such a fate again, particularly given their significant investment and their manager’s relentless intensity, which he views as beneficial. Just as Ferguson demanded winning through fear of defeat, Strachan believes De Zerbi instils a similar apprehension in opposing teams.
