Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Troy Parrott has been dubbed the saviour of Real Betis after the Spanish side completed a transfer from AZ Alkmaar. The Republic of Ireland international, aged 24, departed Spurs for the Dutch club in 2024 following six seasons in north London.
The Eredivisie outfit will receive £17.1million for Parrott after two campaigns in Alkmaar, during which the striker found the net 51 times and supplied 17 assists across 97 matches. His switch to the Andalusian club means Tottenham will also benefit from approximately £3.4m, as a 20 per cent sell-on clause was included when he moved from Spurs to the Netherlands two years prior.
The atmosphere surrounding Betis is optimistic. Spanish publication SPORT has described Parrott as the saviour the club have been searching for in vain for 10 years.
The publication states Parrott’s signing will address the position that has been their biggest area of weakness in recent years. The outlet also asserted that the centre-forward has always been the most sought-after player in football.
SPORT places Parrott alongside elite company, noting that while plenty of wingers can dribble, false nines drop deep to receive the ball and help create chances, and attacking midfielders have a knack for scoring, centre-forwards like Hugo Sánchez, Luis Suárez, Erling Haaland or Robert Lewandowski are not common. Parrott now embodies the club’s hopes and long-held desire to secure a player who is sorely needed in modern football.
The report also suggests Parrott possesses qualities to follow in the footsteps of Betis legends Ricardo Oliveira and Jorge Molina.
Oliveira arrived at Betis in 2004 and returned for a second stint in 2009. He played a crucial role during the club’s most successful campaign in half a century, netting 22 league goals as they achieved a fourth-placed finish and qualified for the Champions League. He also contributed significantly to their 2004 Copa del Rey victory. Molina joined Betis in 2010 and scored 77 goals.
Tottenham can now add a further £3.4m to their summer transfer budget following Parrott’s departure. The north London club sold the Republic of Ireland international in a deal worth £6.7million, as reported by football.london.
Any additional revenue will prove beneficial for Spurs. The club have engaged in discussions with Manchester City regarding a potential double acquisition of attackers Savinho and Omar Marmoush, with the combined fee reportedly reaching £150m, with Roberto De Zerbi having emphasised his desire to strengthen his attacking options.
