Tottenham Hotspur’s former centre-back Toby Alderweireld is set to appear as a studio analyst on the BBC’s flagship football programme this season, joining amid suggestions that other regular contributors may be leaving.
The Belgian, who turned 37 this year, represented north London club Tottenham for six seasons and was in the team that contested the 2019 Champions League final. He brought his playing career to a close in 2025 with Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp, his hometown club.
The defender earned 127 international caps for his country and will become part of an expanding group of ex-Spurs players working in broadcasting. Gary Lineker, who previously presented Match of the Day, is among the most prominent names in this group, while former Tottenham goalkeeper Joe Hart has become an increasingly familiar face in the BBC studio.
The broadcaster announced the veteran defender as one of several new additions to the show’s roster throughout the campaign. Danish manager Thomas Frank, previously Tottenham’s head coach, is also joining the lineup after contributing to the BBC’s World Cup coverage.
According to The Sun, Alderweireld’s arrival coincides with concerns about the future of other analysts on the programme. The newspaper reports disputes between BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski and individuals linked to Match of the Day, though the BBC stated that these anonymous claims were untrue and expressed anticipation for bringing audiences the return of Match of the Day with its established presenters and pundits alongside new guest voices offering fresh insight.
The latest developments come twelve months after the broadcaster revamped its presenting team for the Saturday evening highlights programme. Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan now share anchoring duties following Lineker’s departure at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season.
Lineker appeared on Netflix during the World Cup while hosting The Rest is Football from the United States and has extended his partnership with the streaming service for the next two Premier League campaigns. Alan Shearer and Micah Richards divided their appearances between both programmes during the international tournament, and The Sun now reports that several Match of the Day analysts are weighing up moves to Lineker’s venture.
Lineker had originally been slated to front the BBC’s World Cup broadcasts even after leaving Match of the Day. However, this arrangement changed when he stepped down in May 2025 after controversy over an online post, and he spoke about his life outside the broadcaster ahead of the international competition. In comments to the Press Association, he noted that he now had more time and felt less constrained, explaining that he was allowed to express opinions on matters. He described his time at the BBC as wonderful and mentioned covering many major tournaments, noting that while he had originally been scheduled to work on the 2026 World Cup, he was now pursuing something different which he found exciting.
Alderweireld’s transition to media work comes two months after he offered assistance to his former club following their narrow escape from relegation. Speaking to The Standard, he explained that he was not claiming to solve every problem, but indicated his willingness to offer advice if requested. He described Antwerp as a fitting conclusion to his career and his club of the heart due to his connection to the city, while expressing gratitude for his time at Tottenham which he considered his best years as a player at his peak. He reflected on his strong bond with the fans and club, indicating he would be happy to help if they wanted his support.
