Guglielmo Vicario has departed Tottenham Hotspur and completed a switch to Juventus on a temporary basis, with the Italian giants holding a reduced-price purchase option for next year.
The 29-year-old shot-stopper has put his signature on an initial season-long arrangement at the Allianz Stadium after three years with the north London club. Vicario originally arrived at Spurs from Empoli in 2023, with that transfer costing £17.2million. Juventus now possess the ability to make his stay permanent by triggering a £6.8m clause plus additional payments next summer.
The Serie A outfit issued a communication confirming the agreement operates on a free loan basis through to the end of June 2027, with the player registered during that period. Juventus also secured the right to permanently acquire his registration, with the fixed fee set at €8million payable across three financial years, potentially rising by a maximum of €2million based on specific performance targets within the contract.
Tottenham’s own announcement outlined that Vicario would spend the 2026/27 season with the Italian club. The statement detailed his arrival from Empoli in June 2023 and noted he had accumulated 117 appearances for the club, recording 29 shutouts. The north London side highlighted his contribution to their 2024/25 Europa League triumph, recalling how he began nine of their 15 matches during their journey to continental success and produced a vital stop in the closing stages to ensure victory in the Bilbao showpiece.
Born in Udine, the Italian international received his first senior Italy call-up in March 2024 and currently has five international caps to his credit.
Vicario had established himself as Tottenham’s unchallenged first-choice goalkeeper following his move from Empoli, overtaking the previously established Hugo Lloris in the selection order. His trajectory shifted when he sustained an injury towards the latter part of the previous campaign, and despite a difficult display from Antonin Kinsky against Atletico Madrid, Roberto De Zerbi opted to reinstall him between the posts, which kept Vicario on the periphery.
From that juncture, Kinsky cemented his position in the team, supporting Tottenham’s Premier League survival through some strong performances, notably keeping an untouched sheet on the final fixture versus Everton that clinched their top-flight status. De Zerbi additionally reinforced his goalkeeping roster by acquiring experienced Burnley number one Martin Dubravka as backup, with Brandon Austin rounding out the department.
For Vicario, the opportunity now presents itself to return to Italy and rediscover his optimal form at Juventus, who begin their Serie A season with a visit to recently promoted Frosinone on Sunday.
