Mateus Fernandes proves De Zerbi wrong after £85m Tottenham benching

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi explanations for his team selection during the club’s visit to Nottingham Forest raised questions after the player in question had previously demonstrated his capabilities against the same opposition.

The Brazilian-born midfielder, acquired for £85million during the summer transfer window, found himself among the substitutes despite being deployed in an advanced attacking role in recent weeks.

Instead, Conor Gallagher was handed the starting berth at the City Ground.

Prior to the fixture, speculation circulated on various platforms suggesting the player had sustained a knock during training earlier in the week.

The decision to name him among the replacements appeared to lend credibility to those rumours.

De Zerbi subsequently introduced the 21-year-old with only seven minutes of standard time remaining, a move that did little to quell the speculation.

The Italian’s official justification centred on the nature of the fixture, claiming the environment was more appropriate for Gallagher’s skillset.

The selection raised eyebrows given that the player in question had previously featured prominently against Forest during separate spells at West Ham and Southampton.

In August 2025, he completed 82 minutes during West Ham’s victory at the same venue, while the previous campaign saw him register an assist when Southampton defeated Forest.

Those prior performances appeared to undermine the rationale provided.

Despite Tottenham’s significant investment of £185million in new midfielders during the close season, Rodrigo Bentancur has emerged as arguably the standout performer in that department.

The Uruguayan has secured a place in the central pairing alongside Tonali, leaving the Portugal youth international in a challenging position regarding his positioning within the side.

Tottenham’s tactical approach has featured the summer signing in a more advanced position.

While the team has encountered difficulties in generating opportunities during the opening stages of the season, the Forest fixture presented what appeared to be an ideal scenario for his inclusion.

Facing a defensive five-man configuration, he could have dropped deeper to carry the ball forward while simultaneously creating numerical superiority in central areas.

Gallagher possesses qualities but thrives when the team is not expected to control possession.

Against Oliver Glasner’s side, that tactical setup represented the least suitable circumstances for his deployment, particularly given Tottenham’s eventual control of 59 percent of the ball.

Multiple considerations may have influenced the selection decision, and retrospective analysis naturally invites scrutiny.

However, the reasoning provided justified the criticism that followed given the evidence available regarding the player’s previous performances against the same opponents.
