Newcastle set to beat £52m registration deadline for Gonzalez ahead of Tottenham clash

Tottenham welcome Newcastle to north London for a Premier League encounter this weekend, with the Magpies potentially fielding a high-profile new acquisition in the lineup.

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle is expected to have his latest recruit available for the clash against Spurs on Saturday.

The Tyneside club are on track to complete the registration of incoming signing Nico Gonzalez ahead of their journey to the capital to face Tottenham.

The Magpies have experienced another challenging summer transfer window, though optimism has grown following last Sunday’s thrilling 2-2 stalemate with Liverpool, giving the new head coach a foundation to build upon.

The northeast club have been busy in the transfer market, and mirroring Tottenham’s approach with Savio, they have negotiated a deal with the Manchester club to secure the services of Spanish midfielder Gonzalez, who is scheduled to complete his medical examination.

They will hand over an initial £48million with additional performance-related payments of approximately £4m for the 24-year-old, arriving at the Etihad Stadium just over 18 months after his previous move from FC Porto under a comparable financial structure.

Gonzalez had been informed he would face stiff competition for playing time at City this campaign, even with Rodri’s exit to Barcelona.

With limited opportunities available, he was forced to explore alternatives, and Newcastle mounted a serious challenge, allocating a significant portion of the funds received from Arsenal for captain Bruno Guimaraes to fund this acquisition.

The midfielder is en route to Tyneside later today to complete the formalities, meaning, barring any last-minute complications, he should comfortably sign before Friday’s midday registration cutoff for the weekend’s fixture.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have received confirmation that their £85m acquisition Savio is eligible for selection in the Carabao Cup tie against Charlton Athletic.

Nico Gonzalez is moving to Newcastle from Manchester City and could feature against Tottenham this weekend.

The Brazilian international has lobbied heavily for a move to N17 following talks with Roberto De Zerbi, and he may now make his bow against the Addicks with ambitions of securing a place in Saturday’s starting eleven against Newcastle.

Tottenham confirmed the signing of the 22-year-old earlier today, following extensive negotiations with their Premier League rivals.

Tottenham are aiming to recover from Saturday’s humbling 3-0 loss at Brentford, while Newcastle are also in Carabao Cup action this midweek, entertaining Championship side West Bromwich Albion.
