Spurs seek quick response against Charlton in Carabao Cup after Brentford defeat

Spurs entertain Charlton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening as they look to recover from the opening-day Premier League loss to Brentford, and the manager must now decide on his line-up for this midweek encounter.

De Zerbi is still processing the disappointing 3-0 reversal at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, but fortunately for the club, there is little time to dwell on that result.

The north London club are back in cup action at home on Wednesday when Championship outfit Charlton arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having stunned West Ham with a 2-1 victory at the London Stadium the previous weekend.

Rotations are anticipated as the Italian aims to have his squad sharp and ready for the league clash with Newcastle the following Saturday, yet the hosts must not underestimate their midweek opponents.

In goal, Dubravka appears likely to get the nod ahead of Kinsky, while alterations could also materialise in the backline.

Porro should finally see some game time after observing the Brentford match from the stands, and at centre-back, Danso and Davies may replace van Hecke and Senesi.

At full-back, Udogie is expected to begin the match having introduced himself from the substitutes’ bench against the Bees, taking over from the seasoned summer acquisition Robertson, who appears to be De Zerbi’s preferred option at left-back.

In the middle of the park, Fernandes is set for a place in the eleven, and Bergvall might be given the chance to atone for his subdued contribution at the Gtech, playing in the number ten position.

Bentancur is anticipated to feature, and the South American could well be tasked with adding some defensive solidity to the centre of the pitch.

Should Savinho complete his move in time, he would likely begin on the right flank. Bergvall may feature as the attacking midfielder, though Williams-Barnett will be hoping for an opportunity, while Tel could retain his spot on the left.

Maddison is uncertain after sustaining an injury during the defeat to the Bees.

Savinho could potentially make his first appearance for the club midweek, with Marmoush also expected to arrive from Manchester City initially on loan.

Kudus is working towards a comeback but whether the Charlton fixture arrives too early for the Ghanaian, who recently travelled home for private reasons, remains to be seen.

Up front, Solanke is set to lead the attack in Richarlison’s absence, though the English forward will need to start making an impact soon with Marmoush incoming.

Potential Spurs side: Dubravka; Porro, Danso, Davies, Udogie; Fernandes, Bentancur; Savinho, Bergvall, Tel; Solanke.
