Tottenham Hotspur appear set to receive a significant cash injection before the transfer window closes, thanks to a sell-on provision included when Troy Parrott transferred to AZ Alkmaar in 2024. The north London club negotiated what is understood to be a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of that £6.7million switch to the Dutch top flight.
The Republic of Ireland forward has excelled since arriving in the Netherlands, finding the net ten times in his opening seven matches before a knee ligament problem suffered in August sidelined him until October.
The 22-year-old recovered to fire in 16 goals across 28 appearances and played a crucial role in helping his country secure a place in the World Cup qualifying play-offs, which naturally drew significant interest from clubs ahead of this summer’s transfer period.
Real Betis are in detailed negotiations with Alkmaar regarding a £17.1million transfer for the former Tottenham academy graduate, having also attracted attention from West Ham United. However, a potential switch to the east London club collapsed after the two sides could not agree on terms.
West Ham had an offer of £15million turned down for Parrott earlier in the summer, falling short of Alkmaar’s £25million valuation, a figure that would have netted Tottenham £5.1million.
Nevertheless, Tottenham remain poised to benefit from the sell-on arrangement, with Betis now leading the race to sign the forward and appearing close to securing his signature ahead of FC Porto and RB Leipzig.
According to BBC Sport, an agreement between Betis and Alkmaar is nearing completion, which would see Tottenham receive approximately £3.4million. The news of an imminent deal emerged just days after Parrott’s AZ team-mate Mexx Meerdink expressed his disappointment at his strike partner potentially departing following the 4-1 victory against FC Utrecht.
Parrott sat out that emphatic victory with what appeared to be a minor injury concern, though Meerdink’s comments suggested a move was close, saying it was unfortunate his teammate was leaving but that it represented a great chance for him to demonstrate his abilities, that the departing player warranted a positive transfer, and that he would remain grounded.
A financial windfall would provide a welcome boost for Roberto De Zerbi’s side during the closing weeks of the transfer window.
Tottenham have been among the most active Premier League clubs in the market after successive disappointing seasons.
Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul Van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have all arrived this summer as the club attempts to refresh its squad.
The club has also generated considerable transfer income, with Djed Spence, Cristian Romero, Will Lankshear, Luka Vuskovic, Alfie Devine, Ashley Phillips, Alejo Veliz and Manor Solomon all departing on permanent transfers.
